Description

“Erster Theil Newer Paduanen, Galliarden, etc.” is a collection of 60 compositions for three, four, five, or six voices, published by Johann Schop in Hamburg in 1633. He was director of the highly regarded Hamburg Ratsmusik for 44 years, and the instrumental music in this collection stems from this work. The instrumentation is not specified. Our edition therefore reproduces the middle voices in both alto and treble clef to make them accessible to both wind and string players, preferably viols. The music is harmonically diverse and always interesting. In solemn pavanes, rhythmically complex galliards, Italian canzonas, and other dance movements, polyphonic and homophonic sections alternate. Our six-volume edition offers this important collection of Renaissance music in its entirety.
