Description

Carl Stamitz was a well-known and highly regarded composer and violinist in the 18th century. He was the son of Johann Stamitz, who is known as the founder and guiding spirit of the Mannheim School. This quartet is one of the latest chamber music works featuring the viola da gamba, as Carl Stamitz used it in 1792 to apply (unsuccessfully) for a position with the court orchestra in Ludwigslust. Stamitz achieves an elegant synthesis of the gallant style of the Mannheim School and the more mature elements of the classical era.
