Description

The well-known parts for viola da gamba in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passions and the lesser-known ones in his cantatas offer a wealth of musically and technically demanding passages. All of these parts are compiled in this edition, which comprises three volumes. The first volume contains a detailed preface and the parts for viola da gamba solo and viola da gamba I, while the second volume contains those for viola da gamba II. The music is based exclusively on the original sources and the ‘Neue Bach-Ausgabe’ (NBA). The cantata ‘Tritt auf die Glaubensbahn’ and the ‘Actus tragicus’ are reproduced in the two keys commonly used today. The third volume is a commentary volume in which editor Thomas Fritzsch provides information on the history, source, and instrumentation of each work, including detailed references to the ‘Bach digital’ database. Our edition provides a complete overview of Bach’s viola da gamba parts and enables their thorough study.
