Description

According to many experts, this trio is one of the most beautiful works by the Graun brothers. This must have been the case in the 18th century as well, since no fewer than seven handwritten copies of this trio have survived. Michael O'Loghlin writes in his introduction about the first movement, Adagio , “The entries are imitative, and at five full bars, the theme is long and complex with several motivic cells.” Not least because of its key of C minor, its chromaticism, and its counterpoint, it ranks alongside the trio from the Musical Offering , although it is clearly intended for two violins rather than flute and violin. For players who are familiar with 18th-century music, it has a moderate degree of difficulty.
