Description

Parthenia In-Violata is a collection of pieces for harpsichord accompanied by a bass viol. It was printed in London in 1625, probably as a wedding gift for Prince Charles of England, who played the viol, and Princess Henrietta of France, who played the harpsichord. Although the composers are not named, comparison with other sources reveals the composers of seven of the twenty pieces: John Coprario, John Bull and Edmund Hooper, all well-known names in the English harpsichord scene of the early 17th century. Our edition uses the notation commonly used today for both instruments. The harpsichord part is of medium difficulty, while the viola da gamba part is rather simple. The viola da gamba reinforces the bass of the richly varied pieces, greatly adding to the sound. - This collection should not be confused with the well-known sister collection Parthenia or the Maydenhead , which was published around 1612 and contains pieces for harpsichord only.
