Description
The ‘Viole Gambs Book’ is a collection of 26 pieces for solo viola da gamba, apparently compiled by an unknown gamba player for his own use. It contains a varied selection of original pieces and arrangements for the gamba. Bettina Hoffmann has identified the sources of several pieces and attributed them to composers such as Hotman, Lully, Corelli and Marais. In her introduction, she writes: ‘We might imagine the creator of our book to be a Swedish gambist who, sometime in the second quarter of the 18th century, compiled music from a wide variety of sources – both time-honoured and modern, local and foreign – and arranged it for the viola da gamba.’ We recommend this collection to anyone wishing to expand his or her repertoire of solo pieces.
