Description

Johannes Mathias Sperger is known to us primarily as the composer of eighteen successful and unique double bass concertos. It is less well known that he also wrote numerous symphonies and chamber music works. We are publishing the first edition of four divertimenti for harpsichord or pianoforte and violoncello or viola, which were composed in 1779. The Divertimento in F major also features a violin part as an alternative to cello and viola. As was often the case at the time – see, for example, C. F. Abel's and J. C. Bach's accompanied harpsichord sonatas – the keyboard instrument plays the main role, while the string instrument has more of an accompanying function, which is nevertheless indispensable for the sound experience. The piano part is characterised by appealing melodies and is easy on the hands, but it is also quite demanding. The string part, on the other hand, is relatively easy and can be mastered by students if necessary. It is good entertainment music in the best sense, as divertimenti should be.
