Beschreibung
Ein näherer Blick auf die Messe Buxtehudes, die nur aus Kyrie und Gloria besteht, offenbart ein eher instrumentales als vokales Konzept. Daher kann man diese Messe auch rein instrumental besetzen – etwa durch ein Gambenconsort – und hat damit eine vorteilhafte und dankbare Alternative zur Ausführung durch fünf Solosänger oder Chor. Eine weitere, durchaus zeitübliche Besetzungsvariante ist das colla parte -Spiel einiger Instrumente mit den dann gegebenenfalls mehrfach besetzten Vokalstimmen. Unsere Ausgaben sehen alle genannten Besetzungsvarianten mit oder ohne Basso continuo vor.

[About the instrumental edition G139:] As is standard for
Güntersberg, overall this is a clear and well-edited edition. The
piece itself would be of significance to those interested in a work
that is both exceptional for Buxtehude, as well as a fine example of
German stile antico composition during the latter half of the
seventeenth century. Though this is not a difficult piece, Buxtehude
provides enough musical material to keep his Missa Brevis engaging for
its duration in performance of six to seven minutes.
