Beschreibung

"The Sonata in C by Johann Michael Nicolai (G041) is a fine piece, cast in the same mould as the more familiar Sonatas for three bass viols in a minor and D major (the piece comes from the same source in Durham), having livelier sections and dances linked by short, harmonically expressive, Adagios. The Sonata ends with a particularly impressive Ciaconi based on a descending bass that covers an entire octave. ..."
The Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, Newletter No. 128 (01.2005)

"... The C-major sonata/suite is ascribed to Nicolai, and is similar to the D major and A minor pieces [Note by Edition Güntersberg: the latter pieces are avaible from Dovehouse Editions]. It consists of a multi-section sonata followed by a gigue and a fine chaconne, similar to the one at the end of the A minor sonata/suite. The problem is scoring. Edition Güntersberg advertises it as for three bass viols and continuo, though in the manuscript the scribe seems to have labelled both the third and fourth lines in the score 'Organo' and then, realising his mistake, changed the 'Organo' on the third line to 'Teorbano'. It is clear that the part is really intended for theorbo, since it is figured but has florid obbligato passages and goes down to GG (a note suppressed in the edition). Nevertheless the part will work on a seven-string viol (or a six-string one if a BB in the second section is changed)...."

Viola da Gamba Society of America News, June 2008:
"The Ciaconi that ends the piece is particularly beautiful, with a challenging but not impossible bass part."
